LAMB HEART DISSECTION

 BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 30/09/2014

To further extend my research, I made the decision to dissect a lamb's heart in order to grasp a full understanding of how a vein behaves. I chose to manually research this myself as oppose to looking through a medical journal because I was able to interpret and dissect the heart in my own way, therefore leading to a unique outlook of the subject with the hope of a more experimental and fresh design process.

When dissecting the heart and searching for veins (which the butchers had helpfully removed), I kept noticing these white 'heart strings' holding together all the muscles. I really like the way that they've attached themselves portraying the attachment through the medium of structure that we as humans have to living.

This learning tangent that I have gone off on, I hope will aid me in the development of designs to come, I certainly feel inspired.

ACCESSORIES DAY 1

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 29/09/14

In preparation for accessories week, i was asked to collect multiple objects that relate to my theme. I had an absolute ball raiding the shelves of Ikea! From there I was able to find window wipers, lollipop sticks, lightbulbs, straws, wall brackets, duck tape and garden mesh.

We were asked to create 5 samples out of the objects that we has accumulated. At first, I didn't really understand this task as I started to make accessories immediately out of my objects. I the  realised I was doing something wrong and different to the group so I stopped and started making the samples then realising the importance of creating them.

Throughout the making stage, I tried to be as inventive as possible with how in which I was attaching the objects to each other. I liked bounding things in red thread as it gave an effect of desperation and also manipulated the objects themselves e.g.: the detached squeegee on the metal rod (both taken from the window wiper) moulded around the thread due to the suppleness of the rubber creating an irregular shape. The glue gun also played a part in the attachment of my objects due to obvious reasons but I also used it as a decorative and textural element.

I really liked this session as it allowed me to be freer and more experimental when it comes to practical work. Comments that I received from peers along the lines of how i could relate these sample ideas back to my themes were very helpful as it opened my eyes to the connections that I can make for a more developed idea coming closer to the design of my final accessory. It made me think in a similar way as the knit sample workshop did, simultaneously making and thinking how I could possibly turn these samples into finished accessory designs.

PRINT DAY 3

FINAL PRINTS - BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 26/09/14

Unfortunately the last day of the print workshop has come to an end. I had prepared three prints (see above) all related to my structural attachment brief. I am extremely happy with all these prints and was excited to see how they would all look on a garment, we were told to select a catwalk image with just a plain white garment. We then had to prepare the image for the application of the print by refining backgrounds and edges to ensure a flawless finish. With the print application I decided to experiment with the scale, I found this very useful as it can give you a real insight into the outcome of a printed garment prior to making it. We then used a filter overlay to make it react like a fabric would behave on a body. This again was useful as it helped me understand the way in which the fabric would react in correlation to my print which is something I've never experienced before.

Overall print week has been an ultimate success as I have compounded all my previous knowledge of repeat pattern making, learning new skills in the process that have made me a stronger print designer. This week has urged me to include some sort of print application in my final design, I look forward to developing print ideas and seeing the final outcome.

PRINT DAY 2

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 25/09/14

In today's session we got given a sample image of a cluster of clouds and the task was to make that image into a repeat pattern without trap lines. I found this incredibly challenging as it was hard to replicate the original cloud shape at first due to the detailing of each individual cloud. However the use of the clone stamp tool really helped me to perfect this repeat. A few peers and I compared our cloud repeats and they were all significantly different which is the beauty of interpretation in the world of print design. We had all successfully managed to re-create this image, overcoming the immense difficulty we felt at the beginning of this task.

Throughout the day we learnt how to use various selection tools in order to suit that task we were given, these included; various lasso tools, marquee tool and the colour range select tool. Prior to this I didn't know as many methods of selection as I do now, which will definitely come in useful when designing prints in the future.

We then returned to the cloud image and got the chance to play around with it, creating a repeat using the cloud image, a ladybird image and the spots from said ladybird. This was a really fun activity as it gave me a chance to utilise my newly acquired skill set and be creative with it.

In the afternoon we were given the chance to work on our own prints for our structural attachment brief. I reopened a previous image of my stand work that I had manipulated on photoshop and transferred the arteries illustration i drew on to a new photoshop document. From this I continued working on this initially idea to develop it into a print block. I will continue working on this for friday's session, in order to have an array of prints to work with.

PLAYING WITH NAN'S JEWELLERY

As part of my research, I wanted to look deeper into the concept of bloodline connections by studying my nan's jewellery. I felt like a child in a sweet shop!

While photographing all the jewels, I kept taking sketches of all the reflections that bounced off the cut of the stone. This enchanted me and made me think that this is the actual reason why we all find stone jewellery so beautiful. However, what I primarily wanted to extract from this research was the pure clean cut lines that the reflections create. Essentially the vein structure of the jewel.

What I also found in my nan's jewellery box were mass amounts of chains, both working and broken. Disregarding the hard exterior of the individual link, the chains as a whole were incredibly malleable as I portrayed the path of a vein on my sister's (the model featured in the photo above) arm. This gave me an idea to consider throughout my design process; To use something that is seen as the extreme of that field and then juxtapose it's purpose through its usage.

Evidently this research has been success as it has equipped me with ideas for development and numerous designs.

PRINT DAY 1

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 22/09/14

Today was the start of the print workshops, which I have eagerly anticipated as I have a major love of creating prints. We started off simply by creating minimalistic poka-dot repeats. We then played around with this idea by experimenting with different effects to alter this repeat and turn it into something more complex (see the image above). Prior to this workshop I knew how to do a repeat pattern, however it has opened my eyes to new ways of creating repeats, which are quicker and more efficient methods. Today we also learnt the importance of a good clean repeat, with no trapped lines or rubbish mirroring.

Next we were giving a image sample of a forget me not flower, which we could manipulate however we wished and construct a repeat from that. This was the first bit of freedom we were given to experiment with creating our own print. I immensely enjoyed this as it allowed me to apply my previous photoshop expertise to this simple repeat pattern brief and I really had fun with it!

Initially I did find this new method of repeat pattern hard to grasp as I was set in my old ways, but as I continued to use it, it made me more efficient in my print making which I will definitely be applying to future designs.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM VISIT

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 22/09/14

Seeing that the science museum was a bit of a disappointment, I then went to the NHM in order to source some inspiration from a new angle of the circulatory system, igneous rock and the weathering of materials.

Whilst browsing in the gift shop, I came across this egg shaped rock amongst all the tatty precious stones that they sell. The structure of the aesthetic marbling effect really appealed to me as it seamed as if it was holding in all the red colouring of the rock, giving it structure to mould itself to.

I feel that this visit inspired me more as it is an alternative way of looking at my concept. For example, looking at the igneous rock, I can envision a panel structure on a garment.

Although it was useful to see my concept from a new perspective, reflecting back I don't think that this research will be the best for generating ideas as I feel that its too separate from my concept and it would interrupt my flow of research.

SCIENCE MUSEUM VISIT

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT - 22-09-2014

Today's visit to the Science Museum, I found quite frankly a little disappointing. I was hoping to be more educated about the circulatory system, where in fact, there wasn't really that much information regarding that subject. Although, I did find these two images that I took of medical teaching models very inspiring due to the portrayal of how veins are structured and intertwine with others. This arrangement reminded me a lot of the red knitwear sample that both I and Phoebe (phoebesmith1.blogspot.co.uk) made last week, which interested me as I wanted to develop on from that knitting sample to go down the crotchet road in order to replicate the nerve structure.

KNIT DEVELOPMENT

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 21/09/14

Immediately after making my knitwear sample, I went straight to the photocopier to scan in my design in. This was triggered off by what my knitwear tutor said in our afternoon crit; "It's amazing what these samples can go on and turn into". He gave me the idea to manipulate the sample and turn it into a garment of some sort.

I started off by copy and pasting the sample numerous times and then arranging them into the shape of a jumper. I then changed the contours of the overall shape by using the liquidity filter.

This process showed me how something like a sample can turn into a garment and how I can visualise an end product just from the sample. Looking at this design, I would love to make it! Depending on how my design development progresses, I may take it forward  for a final design.

LIFE DRAWING

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT  18/09/14

Today’s life drawing session was extremely useful, as it has helped me develop my artistic response to the human form. I used a range of mediums including oil pastel, chalk pastel, pencils and promarkers with in 5, 10, 15 minute time slots. My favorite medium was ink as it is one that I have never really experimented with in the past, but it was quite a liberating tool to use to show my expression and style of drawing. By each drawing, I could feel my confidence growing as I was tried bolder lines, more shading and also the application of colour.

My favorite drawing of the session was the one featured below. I feel that this was the most interesting pose that the life model did. I positioned myself differently as well in order to capture an interesting angle.

Reflecting back on the session, I would say that I was proud of my efforts as I feel as if I have established my true style of drawing. the only aspect that I feel that I could have improved on was my fashion life drawing. I wasn't sure whether it was the models clothes that didn't motivate or excite me or if I need to work on my response to drawing the drapery of clothes. From looking back to my 50 designs in my sketchbook, I personally feel more comfortable drawing garments and looks that have come from my imagination and therefore feel less constriction from the reality of drawing clothes as they are in front of me.

Throughout the day I was noticing the unique textures and shapes that I had drawn as a result of hasty sketching. I was very intrigued by these said movements on the page. As development from this session, I want to look closer at the independent stokes that I have made and possibly look at them from a digital print angle and use this further on in my design process.

STAND EXPERIMENTATION ON PHOTOSHOP

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 14/09/14

From the stand workshop, I wanted to develop this piece in particular as I was really pleased with the outcome and saw the potential that it had via digital development.

The shape that formulates the pattern piece structure originated from a reflection that came off of my necklace. During the session, I made the decision to pin the seams on the outside as it made the shape more rigid and gave it a stronger structural presence. From looking at these seams, it reminded me of my structural theme of veins and arteries due to the connection and interlinking of pattern pieces. To develop this piece, I wanted to combine these two to really reflect my structural attachment theme, Bloodline Connections.

To make this do this, I drew artery-like shapes using the poly lasso tool, filled them with colour, and then gave them an embossed look to portray an actual artery.

Reflecting back on this little experimentation, I feel like it has connected me with my concept and helped me understand how I want to develop further ideas. This has now made me want to research veins and arteries in greater detail.

WORKING ON THE STAND

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 12/09/14 (Modelled by Niove Louca)
BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 12/09/14

I was really looking forward to working with the stand as I feel that I work quite well with 3-D. We were all asked to cut out a shape from our sketchbooks. I chose the shape of a reflection from my necklace. Then we were given our first task. It threw me off a bit as we were asked to work with someone else's shape. I think this was because I didn't really understand where the shape came from so I didn't exactly know how to use it. However, this turned out to be a blessing as it allows for fresh eyes and new ideas to be interjected leading to a new perspective.

My least favourite activity was the seam modelling. As we had to cut the paper into tiny strips, it was incredibly flimsy to use and keep ripping when I would do too much of a dynamic shape. But reflecting back to it, I am now grateful as it is an extremely useful method in order to determine seam placement on the body. I think I need to practice this technique in order to get the not out of it in the future.

Overall my favourite task of the session was working with the dot and cross paper doing 3-D construction. The beauty of it was that I started off making a shoulder piece with no ideas of what end results I wanted and it turned into a headpiece that I'm really proud of. I would definitely like to develop this piece further to the point where a sample is made. Overall it has been a successful learning process.

COLOUR

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 10-09-14

The process of deciding on a soul colour in order to fulfil the 'mono' brief involved referring back to all the research that I had done. The most useful pieces of research for this task were my concept boards. There was an extremely clear colour direction throughout both boards, and that was red. However, for experimentation purposes, I wanted to try other colour found in my research, to be specific, my initial sketches of my objects related to structure and attachment.

I made a colour swatch page with all the colours and put them against the 50 designs that I had sketched earlier to see which colour had the best connection. I found that the best colour was red as it was the most relevant to my concept 'bloodline connections'. I am really excited to experiment with red and play with the tones in my garment designs.

CAPSULE COLLECTION

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT - 10-09-14
BEAU SCARLETT-PITT - 10-09-14

From the 50 designs that I had drawn in preparation, I selected some to include in my collection. Being a capsule collection, I needed to include specific details and shapes that would run through the whole collection in order to make it consistent, so insight of this, I had to develop the shapes slightly on some of the designs.

Reviewing my designs, I felt that the shapes don't reflect my structural influences. As I was very rushed for time, I didn't spend as much time as I think I should have on the development of the initial sketches that I did.

To fix this issue, I am going to look back at all my initial sketches and select different looks for development that run closer to the themes that I have researched and created. hopefully this will then allow me to design a capsule collection that is more relevant to my research and that I see as successful.

This workshop has definitely opened my eyes to the amount of work that goes into achieving a successful capsule collection. The fact that there has to be a consistent style running throughout, whether that be down to the colours, shape, shoes or even button engravement.

SPEED DESIGNING

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 10/09/14
Today learnt how to speed design and also to pay more attention to garment detail. We started off the day by picking out a particular detail on something we were wearing, I chose the curve detail on the top of my trainers. From this, I developed the shape into numerous garment designs given 5 minutes for each type.

At first I found the exercise difficult as I'm used to spending a longer amount of time thinking about shape and detail. However, this technique forced my to be both bold and brave with my lines leading to some very interesting garment designs. Due to the rapid speed, it was inevitable that was going to make mistakes, although reflecting back on them now I don't see then as mistakes. I actually find using this method makes it easier to design and gives me more successful outcomes.

I used the exact same process when doing my 50 designs based on the structural attachment brief and took shapes from my concept boards and my research sketches. The shape that I found most successful was the shape of a light reflection from my ring and also the nerve illustration. After using this technique, I feel as if there are many more possibilities and so much more potential for development within my designs. I definitely feel braver and more confident with the speed design process now.

BRITISH MUSEUM VISIT

Hermes, the messenger god - BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 09/09/14

I found my visit to the British museum very useful. I saw many sculptures that have unleashed floods of design inspiration, in particular, the sculpture above. When I initially looked at it, all I noticed was the body, it was only until I had a closer look at the whole image where I realised there was a vein like structure holding the piece up. This instantly gave me the idea of using boning in the seam detail on a garment to portray the structure of veins and how they support the human body. Insight of this enlightenment, I would call this primary research a success.

CHANGE OF CONCEPT

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 09/09/14

Looking through all my research that I had gathered so far and being really critical of the concept, I found that I wasn't inspired by it and it wasn't strong enough. This left me more confused and unclear about how to develop what I was exploring.

In light of this confusion, I decided to start anew to provide myself with the best possible opportunity to generate ideas that were original and that I understood and felt a stronger connection to. I looked back on the objects that I'd brought in on the first day and selected my favorites; the ring that my Nan gave to me for my 18th birthday, a photograph that I took of a corroded Cuban ceiling and my hand.

My ring is inevitably an attachment that is quite strong as it from a blood relative that I'm very fond of. By simply looking at the aesthetic of the ring and the reason as to why I'm so attached to it I came up with a concept almost instantly - 'Bloodline connections'. For this concept, I want to look into family connections that can be forged by objects for example; my ring. As this concept is very new, I will have to research into this idea more to expand my thinking and designing process.

For structure, I looked towards my drawing of my hand that I had completed on the first day and also the picture that I took of a ceiling in Cuba when I visited last year. I stared at both for quite a while and then came to the realization of their similarities. They both contain structural elements to do with the skeletal and the circulatory system. This is quite literally the case for my hand, but for the ceiling you can see that it's still the same idea just with a varied interpretation. They both have a likeliness to architectural blueprints which show that veins are the very basis of structure.

I now feel that I have a concept that I am inspired by and look forward to the development of this concept through my designs and research.

CONCEPT BOARD TRIAL

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 06/09/14

My initial thoughts on my images were that they were strong individually however as a collective they didn't unite aswell as id hoped. What I think the issue is was that I had tried to combine too many different elements of attachment and structure expecting spectators to automatically see the link that I have made in my head, where clearly this isn't as explicit as I need it to be. For example, with my structure concept board, I had included a shot from an androgynous shoot that I did conceptually linking it to structure as androgynous dressing people breaking the current structure that society holds over how each sex should dress by inventing an entirely new way of thinking.

Comparing this to my other images which are quite literal in the sense of visually being structured, it doesn't necessarily forge the connection or flow on the board as you can see in the image.

What I need to do now is try to find that link that will successfully associate all the images, whether that be finding another image, editing them in a way that successfully illustrates the concept or sourcing new images and starting a fresh.

SAATCHI GALLERY REVIEW

 RICHARD WILSON - 20:50
XAVIER MASCARO - MASKS

This exhibition was captivating through Wilson's clever use of deception and trickery. The idea of deconstructing the attachment to what the spectator thinks is reality, to reveal a deeper connection to explore. Whereas Mascaro’s portrayal of the complexity of the mind through iron forms illustrates how delicate we actually are.
