SPEED DESIGNING

BEAU SCARLETT-PITT 10/09/14
Today learnt how to speed design and also to pay more attention to garment detail. We started off the day by picking out a particular detail on something we were wearing, I chose the curve detail on the top of my trainers. From this, I developed the shape into numerous garment designs given 5 minutes for each type.

At first I found the exercise difficult as I'm used to spending a longer amount of time thinking about shape and detail. However, this technique forced my to be both bold and brave with my lines leading to some very interesting garment designs. Due to the rapid speed, it was inevitable that was going to make mistakes, although reflecting back on them now I don't see then as mistakes. I actually find using this method makes it easier to design and gives me more successful outcomes.

I used the exact same process when doing my 50 designs based on the structural attachment brief and took shapes from my concept boards and my research sketches. The shape that I found most successful was the shape of a light reflection from my ring and also the nerve illustration. After using this technique, I feel as if there are many more possibilities and so much more potential for development within my designs. I definitely feel braver and more confident with the speed design process now.
