Today, we were asked to take apart the items that we had brought in the previous day and to deconstruct them to play around with them on the stand. I decided to take apart all the tailoring pieces as these confused me and were also the garments that I was most drawn to due to their structure.
I totally underestimated the lengthly process that it was to unpick each of these garments. It was like a jigsaw puzzle in some sense. However lengthly the process was, it was essential to really experiment and exploit the garments bare bones for manipulation.
The below draping session was my favourite as I feel that I challenged the conformities of formalwear and suiting totally flipping the idea on it's head by degrading it to casual wear/streetwear. I asked a fellow peer (phoebesmith1.blospot.co.uk) what the piece instantly brought to her mind, her response was "Shellsuit". I was delighted with this feedback as it sparked an idea in my head. The concept of turning the class system on its head, degrade the idea of high society by equipping all the pikeys and chavs with tracksuits made of the finest wool blend suiting fabrics.
I feel like today I have achieved a concept to work forward with that will really drive my designs forward. My plan to look back through all my draping work and select details that I like and incorporate them into developed designs and then final designs.
